Not quite sure what all is involved for nursing a baby? How about when and where you should pump milk for your newborn?
Questions and worries like these are common for expectant parents. That’s why a special corner - a nook - was carved out at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center for parents-to-be.
The Nursing Nook provides moms and dads information, as well as a lengthy list of gifts for that new bundle of joy.
Four years ago, the Nook began as a place for parents to go and have their questions answered. Nursing supplies, breast pumps, clothing accessories and developmental toys are on display for parents to buy.
Betsy Block, consumer specialist at Lutheran, said the Nursing Nook is a hit in the hospital and known throughout town. Women come from all over town to get fitted for a bra during those all-important later months of pregnancy. That’s because everyone who works in the Nook is a trained fit specialist.
And while moms are getting fitted for their new bra, children can play in the children’s area.
Block said the Nursing Nook has a comprehensive prenatal program that adds to the care at the Lutheran Birthing Center. After mom and baby have spent some time at home, they will return to the hospital to meet with a lactation specialist. The specialist helps both mom and baby understand the best way to feed. If that’s not enough, Block said the Nursing Nook stocks a complete line of how-to-breastfeed books. All profits raised by the Nook go back into the store for materials and supplies.
Block said the Nursing Nook is building a reputation in the community as one of the best places to get a proper bra fit. Patients from other hospitals are always welcome.
"We have had such positive feedback," Block said. "That’s how I know of our success is because of our repeat customers.
"There’s really a lot of services available to people."
Block said breastfeeding pumps are available to purchase and also for rental.
New mothers often ask how to choose a breast pump. Factors such as the baby’s age and weight, and the mother’s plans to stay home or return to school or work will determine which pump is correct for them. The Nursing Nook carries a variety of state-of-the-art pumps, including Medela, Avent and Hollister products, at the lowest prices in Denver.
The birthing center also has designed education programs to give expert information at every stage. Classes for early pregnancy, childbirth preparation, breastfeeding, siblings, as well as courses are offered to help smoothly make the transition into parenthood and beyond.
Exempla also offers OB Online, a program containing a wealth of education about pregnancy, baby care and early parenting for mothers and fathers. You can find information about every stage of pregnancy and your baby’s first year. Visitors also may sign up for a free pregnancy and baby care e-newsletter.
