University of Phoenix awards local RN with a $10,000 Voice Your Change Scholarship to earn a bachelor’s degreePublished 10/12/2010

University of Phoenix has been in Colorado for more than 28 years and has helped thousands of residents earn their advanced degrees to meet their personal and professional goals. As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to provide access to educational opportunities, the Southern Colorado campus recently awarded Suzette Smith with its first ever “Voice Your Change” Scholarship.
Smith, a 54-year-old Colorado Springs resident, has been a registered nurse for 23 years. With extensive experience in pediatrics, the intensive care unit (ICU) and occupational nursing, she was frustrated about being overlooked for several promotions because she didn’t have the educational background to support her expertise.
The “Voice Your Change” Scholarship, which awards a $10,000 scholarship to help a Southern Colorado resident get one step closer to their dreams, will help Smith earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She will take classes online and utilize the academic resources and support tools at the University’s Southern Colorado campus, located at 5725 Mark Dabling Boulevard, or its learning center, located at 2864 S. Circle Drive. The online bachelor’s program offers Smith the opportunity to go back to school while balancing her full-time job and taking care of her family.
“University of Phoenix is thrilled to help Suzette change her life,” said Brittany Nielson, University of Phoenix Southern Colorado Campus Director. “The University’s new ‘Voice Your Change’ Scholarship will be an annual program that helps local residents, like Suzette, achieve their personal and professional goals by earning an advanced education.”
