I started to read your publication because I found it provocative and uninhibited. It obviously wasn’t written by administrators. I’d love to see more articles on the nursing shortage locally and nationally, the number of nurses represented by unions 10 years ago compared to today, and the impact of collective bargaining on nurses’ salaries and ultimately patient outcomes. I’d also like an honest evaluation of the A.M.A.’s opinion and suggestions for solving the current nursing shortage.

We need to stop the subtle hierarchical treatment of nurses in hospitals, and really in all settings. For example, predominantly male physicians having the female nurse pull the obese patient up in bed while they stand there and watch, really. Sorry, I’m not going to take this anymore. After doing this for 23 years, is this the privilege of having the extra education, that you don’t have to get your hands dirty and leave the heavy work for others? The young doctors, usually men, can act like men, and step up to the plate. Truly, I am not trying to shirk my duties, but these jobs aren’t just for women. In what other profession would a man go get a woman to do the heavy work?

And how about a real morale booster? How about the health care facility or hospital forking over some cold hard cash to defray costs of the annual nursing staff holiday party? This would be so much more appreciated than a popcorn tin that’s been collecting dust on a store shelf for God knows how long, or a box of chocolates. But I was philosophic.

Thanks for giving nurses a platform and a mouthpiece for issues that concern (or at least should) all of us. Carry on the daily battle to disseminate info. Your publication is great, I always read it the same day it comes in the mail.
