The Children's Hospital Continues to Rank among Nation's Best Children's Hospitals in U.S. News & World Report

The Children's Hospital once again ranked among the nation's best pediatric hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 edition of Best Children's Hospitals. The hospital ranked in nine specialty areas surveyed; among those, five specialties ranked in the top ten and three ranked in the top five. Specialties ranked include cancer (11), diabetes & endocrine disorders (4), gastroenterology (5), heart and heart surgeries (19), kidney (28), neonatology (9), neurology and neurosurgery (20), orthopedics (9), and pulmonology (5).

Nurse-Family Partnership Receives $2 Million Gift

DENVER— Nurse-Family Partnership, a leading non-profit organization addressing the needs of low income, first-time parents and their children, has received a $2 million gift from Jim Hagedorn, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company in Marysville, Ohio, and a member of the Nurse-Family Partnership Board of Directors. Hagedorn’s donation will aid Nurse-Family Partnership’s ongoing efforts to create and expand community and state support of the NFP evidence-based public health program around the United States.

Baer named medical director of surgery at Porter Adventist Hospital

Dr. David A Baer has been named the medical director of surgery at Porter Adventist Hospital. He will work with the surgical leadership team to improve safety and efficiency, growth and regulatory compliance in the surgery department. Dr. Baer has held leadership positions at Porter for the past 10 years, including three years as medical staff president, as well as serving on numerous hospital committees and task forces.

Findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)

According to preliminary data, the rate of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after reciept of 2009 H1N1 vaccine is consistent with seasonal influenza vaccine - 1.92 cases per million people. This rate represents a slight increase from the incidence rate of GBS in the general population, which is 1.22 cases per million. This means that the incidence of GBS for vaccinated people is only about 1 additonal case per million people. The rate of GBS for 2009 H1N1 vaccine is also much lower than the rate of GBS seen during the 1976 swine flu vaccine campaign. According to the report, between October 1, 2009 and May 10, 2010, there were 27 documented cases of GBS within 42 days of vaccination, however direct causality was not established.

Memphis, Tennessee - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has been named the nation's top children’s cancer hospital in the 2010-11 Best Children's Hospital rankings published in U.S. News & World Report. St. Jude received the best overall score summarizing quality of care. St. Jude is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children and serves as an international resource to physicians and researchers.
